Premier League News: Alan Shearer says he thinks Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale was really ‘self-assured and cocky’ as he praised the keeper’s display in the north London derby.
Aaron Ramsdale played a key role for The Gunners at the weekend as they managed their first away Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur since 2014.
Arsenal beat Spurs in the first half and went 2-0 up. Martin Odegaard scored a stunning long-range goal after Hugo Lloris put the ball into his own net after a fine run from Bukayo Saka down the right.
But The Gunners relying on Ramsdale to ensure they maintain their two-goal advantage in the second half. The England keeper made a series of impressive saves to deny Ryan Sessegnon, Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski.
Ramsdale celebrated in front of the south stand of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by kissing the crest The Gunners and stuck out his tongue. He got into a confrontation with Richarlison before he was kicked by a Spurs supporter as he tried to retrieve his water bottle after the final whistle.
Alan Shearer feels the 24-year-old is certainly not to blame for the incident and praised his performance in the north London derby. The former Newcastle and England striker also paid tribute to Arsenal for moving away from conflict after the game.
“Anyway, Ramsdale was outstanding throughout the game, confident and cocky, and he is not to be blamed for what happened after that when he bent down to pick up a water bottle. So what if he kisses the crest?” said Shearer to The Athletic.
“And is it all right, is it not, to get some and give some in return, even if only a little? Or since players are paid decent money, do we think they should just put up with it, put up with the abuse, and just hang around like robots?
“Off the top of my head I can’t think of any other environment, certainly not related to leisure or entertainment, where things like this are normalized as far as in football. Respect to Ramsdale and Arsenal for pulling away from more confrontation.”
