A long-term Oviedo: the decisions being made at the club

Oviedo has had little time to think long-term since the end of last season. There was hardly a quiet month. Since May 2022, three coaches -Ziganda, Bolo and Cervera-, three sports directors -Rubén Reyes, Tito Blanco and Roberto Suárez- have taken place, and a change of ownership has taken place that has transformed the entire operation of the club.

With the blue team stabilized in the middle of the table after the difficulties with Bolo and Tito, the managers of Oviedo have opted in recent weeks to look to the future and ensure the sports base of the first team. The philosophy of Pachuca, owner of Oviedo, which marks the line to follow from Mexico, definitely influences decision-making. And the base for the Carbayona entity goes through the footballers of the quarry and those players settled in the team who have many years ahead of them.

“You have to take care of your own products. For a football issue and also for the economy,” they say in Oviedo. The last steps to follow mark that path. The blue club has already closed several renewals and is advancing to finalize the contract extension of central defender Dani Calvo, the leader of the defense this year. The talks, as reported by LA NUEVA ESPAÑA, began a month ago and although it was suspected that it could go on for a long time, both parties have accelerated in recent days and hope to be able to reach an understanding. The agreement is not closed, but it is close. For Oviedo, tying up Calvo is a priority. The defender is 28 years old, a lot of football ahead of him and at the club they set him as an example of what a strategic signing was. Hence, the bet is decided to prevent him from packing his bags in June, when he ends his contract. Even more so considering that last summer several teams polled him, some even from the First Division. Oviedo considers it essential to retain him. The blue homegrown players enter another step, who are playing a leading role in this squad. The order is clear from Pachuca, with Agustín Lleida, general director, and Roberto Suárez, sports director, as executors: the players trained in the house cannot be allowed to escape. If any team comes after them in the future, leave money in the box. The matter of the quarry flows by two slopes. On the one hand, there are those settled in the eleven. On the other, those who break down the door.

In the first section, Lucas stands out this year, for many the most outstanding man of this course in Oviedo. Miguelón, in fact, decided to pack his bags, among other things, due to the high level of the Oviedo player and the difficulty in moving him from the eleven. Lucas, like Calvo, ends his contract in June. His previous extension was signed in the time of Arnau and in Oviedo there is no doubt that the 27-year-old player deserves to continue in the blue ship. Since his desire is to commit to the club again, it is expected that there will be no problems. Something similar happens with Javi Mier, with whom there are also contacts for a renewal that is expected to close in the entity. Mier, who is injured, has proposals from other teams for the coming season, but his will is to continue in Oviedo.

Parallel to the situation of Lucas and Mier, the club has also tied up younger players who, little by little, have been making a place for themselves in the first team. Mángel’s renewal until 2026 will be a reality in the coming days and it will join the expansion of Abel Bretones, the last homegrown player who has settled in the eleven. Bretones also committed until 2026 after making a hole in the eleven. Currently, he is the undisputed left-back for Cervera.
