Fans gather for prayer in front of Pélé’s hospital

Concerns about Brazil’s football legend Pelé

Pelé responded to a media report about his health with a social media statement. The 82-year-old follows his treatment “as usual”, it said on his Instagram account on Saturday.

Pélé has been in a hospital in São Paulo since November 29. The football legend is treated there palliatively, the concerns of the Brazilians are great. Numerous fans are now gathering in front of the building. Together they said the “Our Father”.

MMore than a hundred concerned Pelé fans gathered on Sunday in front of the hospital in São Paulo where the Brazilian soccer star has been treated since Tuesday. The fans stood in silence most of the time in front of the clinic in the Morumbi district, but also prayed at times. They formed a circle and held hands while saying the “Our Father”.

“We are here to give him strength so the king of football can recover,” said Maicon Peterson, who attended the vigil with his two-year-old son. “We’re suffering a lot, but God willing, he’ll get through this.”

Pelé was hospitalized again on Tuesday. The reason given by the doctors was a “review” of the chemotherapy with which the 82-year-old has been treated since colon cancer surgery in September last year. According to the information, there was also a respiratory infection.

On Saturday, the newspaper “Folha de São Paulo” reported that Pelé was no longer responding to chemotherapy and was now receiving palliative care. The hospital and Pelé’s family have not confirmed this.

Pelé’s doctors also did not respond to the report in a statement on Saturday. They simply stated that Pelé’s health was “stable”. “He is responding adequately to treatment for his respiratory infection with no deterioration in the past 24 hours,” the hospital statement said.

Finally, Pelé spoke personally from the hospital. “I am strong, have a lot of hope and am continuing my treatment as usual,” he wrote on Instagram. The three-time soccer world champion urged his fans to stay “calm and positive”. He also thanked everyone for the get well wishes from all over the world. These would have given him “a lot of strength” to follow, among other things, the games of the Brazilian national soccer team at the World Cup in Qatar.
