Van Gaal: First world champion, then change of nations

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal is aiming to cap his glorious career by winning the World Cup in Qatar. But according to rumors, the “tulip general” is far from having enough.

At the beginning of the year, Louis van Gaal announced that he was suffering from prostate cancer and that the World Cup in Qatar would probably be his last major appearance. However, there is no question of the serious illness in the desert finals. The Oranjes have stormed into the quarter-finals, and according to captain Virgil van Dijk, the team wants to “go the extra mile” for the coach. So far this has been successful. The “Bonds coach”, who is in charge of his home country’s national team for the third time (2000 – 2002 and 2012-2014), has a very special statistic to record: he is still unbeaten after 120 minutes of World Cup finals. He only lost the 2014 semi-final against Argentina on penalties.

Van Gaal confidently set the goal for the controversial World Cup: “We’re here to win the world title,” announced the self-proclaimed “celebration beast” before the start of the finals. It remains to be seen by December 18 whether the feat of winning the coveted trophy will be successful.

resignation from resignation?

But that’s not all. As the Netherlands rush from victory to victory, a killer rumor is making the rounds in Qatar. Because van Gaal should have a new job offer instead of retiring due to health reasons. He is supposed to take over the post in neighboring Belgium, of all things. Long-time coach Roberto Martinez left the ÖFB opponent in the European Championship qualifiers after the embarrassing end in the group phase. Van Gaal has already been asked about this and has at least left the door open: “I think Belgium is a very beautiful country with friendly people. Knokke (popular holiday resort on the North Sea coast) is a beautiful beach palace. I’ve already thought about that.” However, there is a catch, he explains further: “You would have to convince my wife Truus, then I would be there immediately.”

First of all, however, the focus is entirely on the World Cup finals and the long-awaited title win. In any case, his successor at the Oranjes has already been decided. Roland Koeman, who failed at Barcelona, will return to the coaching bench.
