Tyrell Terry, a young basketball promise, has decided to retire from the sport at just 22 years old, being chosen by the NBA as a player in 2020, after playing a season with the Stanford University Cardinal and averaging 14.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game. With these results, he was included in the Pac-12 Conference’s All-Rookie Quintet. Later, he was selected in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks and signed a contract with the Memphis Grizzlies shortly after.
And it is that, despite the fact that his career was beginning to start and seemed to be leaning towards a successful future, Tyrell Terry announced this week that he was retiring from basketball due to anxiety problems related to sports at a professional level.
In an Instagram post, he wrote, “Today I have decided to let go of the game that has formed so much of my identity. Something that has guided my path since I took my first steps. Although I have accomplished incredible things, created unforgettable memories and made lifelong friends… I have also lived through the darkest moments of my life. To the point that instead of building me, it began to destroy me. To such a point that I began to wonder about my value as a person, far beyond what people could see or know. Intrusive thoughts, waking up nauseated, having a hard time even breathing from the pressure on my chest, and this is just a little bit of what the anxiety has given me about basketball and while I have so much love for the sport and the doors it has given me open, I can not continue in something that I no longer love.
