The Women’s National Team opens its Path to the Future

After the summer hiatus once they failed to get a place in the World Cup that was held in Australia, the Women’s National Team has returned to the field, with renewed illusions and in a big way: ensuring their participation in the Eurobasket 2023 the first time. And with the legendary Laia Palau back in their ranks, from now on in her position as Team Manager on the team’s Road to the Future.

Two victories over Iceland and Hungary definitively sealed the passport of the Women’s National Team to the Eurobasket next June in Israel and Slovenia. Against the Icelanders, in addition, Spain broke two records: the most points scored in a game in its entire history (120), the three-pointer (16) and the assists (36). The final 120-54 was sealed by Laura Quevedo with a triple at the buzzer. And the 77-66 over the Hungarians was worth the classification.

The two games were played in Huelva, where the team received a warm reception from the fans.

Before, in May-June, the team held a rally with two friendly matches.

The 18 players who participated in this new phase of the team, with Miguel Méndez as coach and baptized Camino al Futuro, were Silvia Domínguez, Cristina Ouviña, Maite Cazorla, Laura Peña, Leticia Romero, Angela Salvadores, Leo Rodríguez, Queralt Casas, Alba Torrens, María Conde, Laura Quevedo, Paula Ginzo, María Araújo, Irati Etxarri, Raquel Carrera, Astou Ndour, Lola Pendande and Nerea Hermosa.

The coach made a more than positive balance of everything: “The group is charming. The chemistry there is, what they are building, with many synergies… everyone wants to make things easy for the one next to them. But all this must be endorsed with a good game and with victories, because with good results a team is built much faster”. With Méndez, by the way, Spain has won the 6 games it has played so far.

In addition, its most historic international, Laia Palau, joined the technical staff of the National Team as Team Manager. She did so just days after announcing her retirement as an active player and less than a year after her last game with the team. Her experience put her now at the service of this Path to the Future.
