The mood of Vincent Langendries: “I am a sad Belgian, Hazard my captain”

So inevitably the memories I have heaps. Impossible to share everything here. His legendary wink, his smiles, his bursts of laughter. His hand over the shoulder to make you understand that friendship can also come in many forms. His beginnings, his audacity, his hooks, his dribbling. But also his trophy for the best player of the match against Hungary at Euro 2016… which he will offer to me by saying ” keep it…I’ll have more “. His giant 2018 World Cup. Best player in the world in those times. His love for the flag and the Belgian people that he expresses on the balcony of the town hall. His ” Where is the party… “His transfer to Zidane’s Real. Dream turned nightmare. And also the beginning of repeated trouble.

We can’t even imagine the void he will leave. It’s not a page that turns with Eden, it’s not a chapter of the national team. It’s an entire library of happy moments falling backwards. Brand of the greats…to be missed. Definitely a family decision. Thoughtful, matured with wife and children. For Eden her clan counts more than anything, more than all that. He will never hide his emotions for very long. So let’s let him digest, take a step back…to get back in the saddle one last time, for one last challenge in the club.

The Devils lose their captain today. Belgium today loses a player and, much more, an exceptional man. So dear Eden, I say thank you for everything. For these moments of grace, engraved forever in our hearts. And I say see you soon…elsewhere and otherwise.
