Two days after the Council of Ministers approved the grant of 7.5 million euros to the Spanish Football Federation (FEF) to promote Spain’s candidacy for the 2030 World Cup, the body chaired by Luis Rubiales will negotiate an agreement with the Government to get that public aid to increase by 2023-2024. «We continue our journey together with Portugal and Ukraine with the illusion of hosting a World Cup. We deserve it, we are prepared and we could organize it in a few months, but with the time we have and the seriousness with which we are working, we are firm candidates,” Rubiales proclaimed this Thursday during the extraordinary assembly in which the FEF approved the second biggest budget ever. There are 382 million budgeted for the 2023 financial year, a figure only surpassed by the 406 of 2022.

The 7.5 million grant will be formally requested by the FEF “in the coming days”, as announced by the top federation leader regarding a contribution that will be financed from the budget of the Higher Sports Council (CSD) corresponding to the year that ends. The FEF continues to be the only sports federation that does not have an ordinary subsidy from the CSD. “This aid of 7.5 million, a finalist for the development of the candidacy and infrastructures, is very good for us,” acknowledged Rubiales, who received the support and congratulations of FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, and UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, through two separate videos. The candidacy of Spain and Portugal, with Ukraine as a guest, will compete, among others, against the joint proposal of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile to host the championship that will be held in eight years.

Rubiales was also pleased with the approval of such a high budget and the ability of the FEF to generate its own resources. «We have great financial independence and even in a valley year (without the World Cup or Euro Cup) the income is maintained in the great concepts and commitments that this Federation has. There is a cruising speed and increases in revenue are expected in the coming years. More than 55% of the amount budgeted for 2023 comes from the income generated by the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, the Copa del Rey, the audiovisual rights of national teams and competitions (121 million), marketing and sponsorships (75 ) and arbitrations (49).

claim justice

«The Arabian Super Cup is signed until 2029 and we cannot continually question it. I have been a manager long enough to know that someone who does not want to be convinced of something will not be convinced. We are not politicians, but if there are ambassadors, bilateral relations and other businesses there, why can’t soccer go there?” asked Rubiales, who insisted that when the tournament was held in Spain “the FEF used to receive 120,000 euros and now 40 million”. “Soccer must go everywhere and help society change due to its beastly transformative power,” Rubiales defended himself, also alluding to the recent World Cup in Qatar, where human rights are not respected.

Regarding the failure of Spain in the World Cup and, after the dismissal of Luis Enrique, replaced by Luis de la Fuente, Rubiales was convinced that “from two to four years” the team will be “in a position to fight for a World Cup or a Eurocup». “But we have already seen that it is not easy,” admitted the person who called for “justice” after lamenting that “this federation has been tried to be stained”, with continuous accusations of alleged corruption.
