The composition of the Latvian U-20 hockey team for Canada is known

The head coach of the Latvian U-20 hockey team, Artis Ābols, has named a squad of 26 hockey players who will go to Canada to take part in the last preparatory stage before the elite World Championship.

The Latvian U-20 national team will start its journey to Canada on Sunday, December 18.

Three goalkeepers, eight defenders and 15 forwards will go to Canada. 20 outfield players and three goalkeepers may apply for the elite World Championship. Two more hockey players will officially be allowed to be in the reserve application. Therefore, the final squad will be named by the coaching staff of the U-20 national team in Canada.

The World U-20 Elite Championship will take place from December 26 to January 5 in the Canadian cities of Halifax and Moncton.

The Latvian U-20 national hockey team will play two test matches before the World Championship in Canada, meeting the Czech Republic (December 20) and Germany (December 22).

The Latvian national team will compete against USA, Finland, Switzerland and Slovakia in subgroup B in Halifax. The four best teams from sub-groups A and B will enter the quarter-finals, while the teams in fifth place will fight for “survival”.

The Latvian hockey team will start the World Championship on December 26, when they will compete against the USA team. A day later, our hockey players will meet their Swiss peers, and on December 29, a duel with the Finnish team is expected. On the other hand, Latvia will conclude the subgroup tournament on December 30, playing against Slovakia.

In August, at the U-20 World Championship in the elite division in Edmonton, our team reached the quarter-finals for the first time in its history, finishing 7th overall.

Three goalkeepers have applied for participation in the championship: Linards Lipskis (“Bobcats” of Bismarck), Patriks Bērziņš (“Hat Tricks” of Danbury) and Kārlis Mežsargs (“Tri-City Storm” of Kearney).

Eight defenders have been registered for participation: Gustavs Ozoliņš (Cloke “Minnesota Wilderness”), Elvis Laškovs (“Nordic Hockey Academy”), Bogdans Hodas (Medisinheta “Tigers”), Rihards Simanović (Emerilo “Wranglers”), Dario Mackevičs (“Mogo”/ LSPA), Edgars Kazaks (Jelgava “Zemgale”/LLU), Niks Fenenko (Baikomo “Drakkar”) and Silvestrs Lazarenoks (Jelgava “Zemgale”/LLU).

15 strikers have also applied: Rogers Bukarts (“Lions U-20”), Roberts Cjunskis (“Lugano U-20”), Emīls Veckaktiņš (“Lugano U-20”), Martins Laviņš (Jovas “Cedar Rapids”), Dāvis Borozinskis (Erbendale “Des Moines Buccaners”), Kristians Samītis (Washington Township “Philadelphia Rebels”), Đirts Silkalns (Erbendale “Des Moines Buccaneers”), Darel Dukurs (Langnava “Tigers U-20”), Rainers Dārziņš (Slefteo AIK J-20 ), Rainers Rullers (“Zemgale” of Jelgava/LLU), Dans Lochmelis (“Lulea J-20”), Sandis Vilmanis (“Sting” of Sarnia), Klaavs Weinberg (“Stars” of Lincoln), Pēteris Purmalis (“Musketeers” of Siusi City) and Henri Ravinsky (“Blainville-Boisbrianda Armanda”).
