Lance Stroll’s 2022 Formula 1 season

In his sixth season in the premier class of motorsport, Lance Stroll performed very, very poorly. Only in his second season at the highest level, in 2018 with the Williams rattle cart, did he score fewer World Cup points than he did this year. Stroll, who was born in Montreal, was never really able to make a fist against his retiring teammate Sebastian Vettel. The German took more than twice as many points as Stroll in 2022 in the mediocre Aston Martin. Below the line, last season turned out to be a painful year for the billionaire’s son.

As usual, Stroll regularly came out better on Saturday than on Sunday. The Aston Martin driver regularly started in the top ten, but from there it turned out to be quite difficult to hold on to a points position. If Stroll did finish in the points, it was often in tenth place. He took the last point in Miami, Spain, home country Canada, France, the Netherlands and Brazil. Only in Singapore – where, in fairness, he delivered a great race and finished sixth – and Abu Dhabi – thanks to a good strategy – did he finish in a higher position.

As mentioned, the rain-soaked Singapore Grand Prix was the highlight of Stroll’s season. In a race riddled with spins and driver errors, the 24-year-old kept his cool and crossed the line in a respectable sixth place. It was his best result of the year, and given the conditions in the Asian city-state, he can only be praised for that.

Three weeks later, however, Stroll experienced its all-time low of the year. At the Circuit of the Americas, the Canadian clumsily defended his position against his upcoming teammate Fernando Alonso. The damage to the Aston Martin was extensive and Alonso miraculously escaped a huge accident. Due to his own fault, Stroll dropped out in the United States, something he did only three times this year. The Canadian in his twenties regularly brought his car across the finish line, but far too often did so in a disappointing position.

Lance Stroll’s plan for 2023

As Stroll’s father is the owner of the Aston Martin team, the chances of him retiring after next season are not particularly high. In 2023 he will have the aforementioned Alonso as a teammate. The Spanish two-time world champion is not exactly known as the easiest colleague, so it remains to be seen how Stroll will deal with that. In any case, one thing is clear: it would be good for his popularity if Stroll could score a few more points next year.
