He was followed by the rest of thealbicelestewho have touched down on a red carpet.

The team boarded a bus to travel to the headquarters of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), just 15 minutes from the airport, where the fans awaited them. During the journey, on the sides of the road, they were greeted by the most impatient, who wanted to be the first to see the Scaloneta – as the coach Lionel Scaloni’s team is affectionately known. Most, however, were waiting on the grassy esplanades next to the AFA, where thousands of people had been since early yesterday afternoon.

Another night, the fans, tireless, celebrated that Argentina is champion, with the difference that today they did it a few meters from their idols, who had been away from home for many days. The return of the champions was the missing piece for the happiness to be complete.

Happy but tired

It didn’t take long for the players and coaching staff to get to the site, where they spend the night. After a journey of almost 24 hours, departing from Doha and with a stopover in Rome, they have arrived happy but tired. Today, Tuesday, declared a public holiday throughout the country, a street will start at noon with an open-top bus through the main avenues of the city, which will pass through what has been the meeting point of the fans these past few days: the Obelisk. A similar attendance to that of Sunday is expected, in which a million people celebrated the victory for more than twelve hours.

It is not yet confirmed whether the team will visit the Casa Rosada. On the previous occasions when Argentina was crowned world champion, in 1978 and 1986, the national team went out onto the balcony of the government headquarters to greet a packed Plaza de Mayo. But the political polarization that currently exists in the country is so great that this option, at the moment, is not clear.

The Argentine coach, Scaloni, has already announced that the celebrations with the fans will conclude today, as the players are eager to travel home, throughout the country’s provinces, to reunite and celebrate the World Cup with their families, with whom they also start the Christmas holidays.
