Pair of sneakers worn by Michael Jordan sell for almost $300,000 at auction – El Financiero

Two pairs of sneakers worn in 1985 by Michael Jordan raised nearly $300,000 (5.8 million Mexican pesos) in an internet auction held by Christie’s.

The star lot of this sale of items aimed at sports collectors was a pair of Air Jordan 1, the first model of sneakers created by Nike for the NBA star, which Jordan himself wore on the court and which was sold for 189 thousand dollars (3.7 million pesos).

Despite the high number, there was only one bid and the lot was placed below the range estimated by Christie’s, which was between $200,000 and $300,000.

Another pair of 1985 Air Jordan 1s, in this case signed and probably worn by the Chicago Bulls legend, sold for $107,100 (2.1 million pesos).

They are not the most expensive Air Jordan, but they are the only ones that were sold

Sales fell short of the record amounts paid in recent years for other Michael Jordan shoes: in 2020 Air Jordan 1S grossed $560,000 and in 2021 Nike Air Ships worn by Jordan in 1984 fetched nearly $1.5 million.

In total, in the auction that Christie’s closed today, seven pairs of Jordan shoes were put up for sale, but several of them were left without a buyer, something that also happened with other items offered, including two other pairs of shoes worn by the tennis player Serena Williams, for which it was expected to raise up to 15,000 and 20,000 dollars, respectively (between 290,000 and 390,000 pesos).

Nor did he find a buyer for a Los Angeles Lakers shirt worn in a game by the late Kobe Bryant and which was presented with an estimated price of between 100,000 and 150,000 dollars (between 1.9 and 2.9 million pesos).

Some exclusive designs were also offered at the auction, such as several pairs of sneakers resulting from collaborations between Nike and Louis Vuitton and a chest designed by the designer Virgil Abloh – who was the artistic director of the French brand and who died in 2021 – sold for just over 100 thousand dollars.
