Hansi Flick has made technical mistakes, but he will probably be allowed to continue working as national coach until the home European Championship in 2024. The replacement of national team managing director Oliver Bierhoff, on the other hand, seems overdue.

Before Rudi Völler was allowed to announce his resignation as team boss after the failure of his national team at the EM 2004, he had to fend off the resistance of the officials. For half the night, DFB President Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder and other association figures in the Portuguese team hotel tried to persuade him to stay. But Völler saw the situation more clearly than the learned gentlemen (one lady was not present). He knew that the personal mortgage was too burdensome to bring the state project World Cup 2006 to fruition.
