Nadal’s promise to Federer when he told him he was retiring

Roger Federer has been retired for several months now, and now he wanted to talk about how he lived that moment, especially how he told it to his friend Rafa Nadal, who was among the first to find out, even before some members of his family. One more proof that the two legends have one of the best friendships in the history of sports.

Rafa Nadal talks about his tears after Federer’s farewell

“My hope was to play the doubles with Rafa. So I called him after the US Open, it was a very emotional phone call, because it was one of the first times that I told someone about my decision to retire, someone who was not inside my team or my family”, explains Roger Federer in an interview.

“I had to call him and decirle, ‘Hey Rafa, before you make other plans, I would like you to come to the Laver Cup and that you played my last doubles match with me. It would be great because my knee is not going to recover and I think this is the end of me,'” Federer told Nadal through tears.

Upon hearing his friend utter those words, Rafa Nadal decided to stop any plan, in a few days that coincided with the final days of his wife’s pregnancy, Xisca Perelló, and this is how Federer narrates it: “He was like, ‘oh my god. Ok, yeah, I’ll be there. Come what may.” Some words that, without a doubt, moved the Swiss tennis player: “You know, he has been a father together and I am very happy with him.”

In recent months much has been said about the withdrawal of Rafa Nadal, however, the Balearic tennis player has repeated, for the umpteenth time, that It is not something that is in your plansAt least in the short term.
