Monaco ends Real Madrid’s winning streak after extra time

The Monaco broke the winning streak Real Madrid al prevail in extra time by 94-95in a tense and disputed match in which Mike James demonstrated its quality, accompanied by Jordan Loyd.

With Alberto Abalde as an unexpected protagonist, with his two initial triples and 3 of 4 at the end of the first act, Madrid took a long time to take the pulse of the game, while Jordan Loyd and Mike James made it clear from the beginning that they are two of the fastest gunslingers in the Euroleague.

Only at the end of the first quarter, which ended with 23-17, was Madrid able to break away on the scoreboard, thanks to Adalde’s good defense against James, the effort of the rest in assists and the usual dominance of Walter Tavares.

Monaco came out more plugged in in the second quarter and a 0-6 start equalized the light, 23-23. Donatas Motejiunas beat Vincent Poirier in the first two direct clashes, but the Frenchman gritted his teeth and made up for it later.

With the changes, Madrid proved to have a better wardrobe and little by little he opened up the gap until reaching a ten-point advantage, 38-28 (min. 15:30), with a toned Sergio Llull.

From there the Spanish team slowed down a bit and Monaco, betting on ‘small’ quintets, bothered the defense of the locals, with a James who returned to his old ways and with 14 points he was the top scorer of the game at halftime.

The Monegasque team showed that their presence at the top of the rankingtied with Madrid at eight victories, was not the result of chance and put as much or more energy on the court than his rival, as much or more speed and as or more facility for the counterattack.

White’s advantage fades

In the end, the Madrid advantage gradually faded to 48-45 with which the teams went to the locker room.

Loyd with a 2+1 and a triple equalized the game, 51-51, and James was in charge of putting Monaco back in front on the scoreboard, 51-52 (m.22).

With the defense encouraged by the score, Madrid gritted its teeth and tried to get a more speed in attack, but Monaco accepted the challenge with James leading, 57-58 (m.25) and a defense bordering on legality.

The lack of a scorer for Real Madrid, since Dzanan Musa was not as successful as usual, and some errors that led to offensive rebounds and easy Monegasque baskets determined the 62-65 lead with which the third quarter ended.

Gerschon Yabusele, who returned to the team in place of Gabriel Deck (with overload), he scored 5 points, triple includedin the first minute of the last quarter to return Madrid to the controls of the score, 67-65.

A technician to Mike James, for protesting angrily, finished pushing the stands to provide the party with the tension it demanded between two of the greats in Europe at this point in the season.

With James showing quality in abundance and the awakening of Musa in scoring, 72-68 (m.33.30) the clash entered another phase, in which each possession began to be worth its weight in gold.

champion caste

Two three-pointers from Llull and Yabusele sent Real Madrid 78-70 (m.35), who He brought out the champion caste when it was most needed. Monaco continued without taking a step back and with just over three minutes to go they got close again, 81-77.

Loyd with another triple made it 86-84 with 38 seconds to go. Madrid gave Tavares experience with the ball and reached the final seconds with a 4-point advantage, 88-84. When everything seemed decided, James returned to, in another genius, score a triple and the extra due to the foul by Tavares. With a tie at 88, the 40 regulatory minutes ended.

Tavares put Madrid ahead again from the free-throw line, but Monaco’s offensive rebounds continued to do a lot of damage. The absence of Loyd, who came out on a stretcher a few seconds before reaching the 40th minute, did not break down the rock team.

The personal shots became the protagonists and Monaco dominated by 92-95 with one hundred seconds to go. With Tavares and Hezonja fouled out, Madrid had several chances from the triple to tie and Musa made it 94-95 with 27 seconds to go.

The score did not move anymore, James controlled the ball to the end.
