MLB – Jean Segura agrees with the Marlins for two years and US$ 17 million

The Marlins have agreed to free agent infielder Jean Segura, a source told MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola. The agreement is for two years and US$17 million, as reported by Héctor Gómez from the station Z101 Digital in the Dominican Republic.

After reaching the World Series, the Phillies declined Segura’s $17 million option for 2023, opting to pay him a $1 million severance package. Thus, the Dominican veteran became a free agent for the first time in his career.

The Phillies acquired Segura in December 2018 in the trade that sent JP Crawford to Seattle. It had been less than two years since Segura had signed a five-year extension with the Mariners. For the Phillies from 2019-22, Segura hit a combined .281/.337/.418 batting average (102 OPS+) with 43 home runs, 34 stolen bases and an 8.4 WAR (per Baseball-Reference).

Segura, who will turn 33 in March, had been the active player with the most games played without reaching the postseason, a streak that ended when the Phillies clinched their berth to the National League Wild Card Series. Although Segura had a .500 OPS in the postseason, he hit some key shots, including a two-run single in the ninth inning of Game 1 of the Wild Card Series in St. Louis that put Philadelphia ahead.

Segura originally signed with the Angels as an international free agent in 2007. He debuted with the club in 2012 and has since played for the Brewers, D-backs, Mariners and Phillies. The Dominican is hitting .285/.330/.408 career and has had an above-average OPS+ in six of his last seven seasons.
