Max Eberl: How he wants to annoy Bayern Munich with RB Leipzig – RB LEIPZIG

Leipzig has been runners-up twice since promotion in 2016. Many bosses in the league – including competitor Borussia Dortmund – see RB in the fast lane. Maybe even more than just second place? Because in addition to a strong squad and great financial opportunities, Max Eberl (49), one of the best German managers, is now in charge of sporting fortunes.

The expectations are clear: With Eberl, Leipzig is attacking the title Bayern!

When he arrived at RB, the ex-Gladbacher spoke of the “greatest possible success” that he wants to achieve during his contract period until 2026. SPORT BILD asked: What would that be? “RB Leipzig always belongs in the Champions League, so I include the top four places. In terms of the big three, I see Bayern miles ahead, because they’ve worked hard for decades and have gained a financial advantage. Leipzig and Dortmund can act on an equal footing,” says Eberl. He knows about the strength of series champion Bayern, but still thinks about the possibility of the championship. “If you want to create something extraordinary, a lot has to come together, but the beauty of football is that it’s worth fighting for a chance, even if it seems very small,” says Eberl.

In his almost 14 years as a sports boss in Gladbach, he has proven that he works hard for success. In the last ten years that Eberl was in charge, Borussia always ended up in the single digits and made it into the European Cup six times. Especially when it comes to transfers, he showed a golden touch. Eberl often bought young players at bargain prices and increased their market value many times over. Marcus Thuram (€9 million transfer fee/€30 million market value), Ramy Bensebaini (€8 million/€20 million), Manu Koné (€9 million/€25 million) and Luca Netz (€2 million/€6.5 million) are just the most recent examples.

Leipzig will benefit from this purchasing quality in the future. The Saxons had not committed any ready-made stars in recent years, but rather brought in young players who have grown in the club. Eberl will continue to fish in similar waters. “RB is still looking for young players with top quality,” says Eberl, who knows that the bait at RB is better than at his former club. “Leipzig has a lot to offer for these players in particular: not only financial opportunities, but above all the prospect of getting a lot of playing time, always appearing in the Champions League and attacking titles,” says Eberl to SPORT BILD.

And the Saxons have another advantage: Oliver Mintzlaff (47), who is now managing director of the beverage giant Red Bull and chairman of the supervisory board of RB Leipzig, built up a system of short decision-making paths in eight years as RB boss. In many other clubs, transfer talks must first be approved by committees. This can sometimes be tedious and make a change fail. “Decisions are made very quickly in Leipzig, which of course increases the chance of signing a desired player. If it takes too long internally to make up your mind and other clubs enter the market, the moment can be over quickly,” says Eberl, who is still familiarizing himself with the club.

Even in Gladbach’s time, the manager had been awarded Tempo. Some transfers only came about because he was on the screen and contacted the players when other clubs were still looking. But when the big clubs entered the race, it became difficult for Eberl. This was the case, for example, with playmaker Dani Olmo (24), midfielder Konrad Laimer (25) and defender Mohamed Simakan (22). The Gladbacher at the time was involved in all of them, but had to accept that they opted for Leipzig.

In the future, Eberl doesn’t want to miss out on such top talents – and wants to attack Bayern with them.
