Kathy Whitworth, the golfer with the most tournament wins in history, dies

Kathy Whitworth, the golfer with the most tournaments won on the professional circuit, died this December 24 at the age of 83. He achieved 88 victories on the LPGA Tour, an all-time golf record, as well as 95 second-place finishes, over a period of nearly 25 years.

A seven-time LPGA player of the year, her winning records are unsurpassed in American golf. She neither in the male nor in the female circuit. among the boys, Sam Snead stayed at 82 victories between 1936 and 1965. The same number has been achieved by Tiger Woods between 1996 and 2019.

Whitworth won the first of her 88 tournaments at the Kelly Girls Open in July 1962.. He’s won six majors in his career. He surpassed Mickey Wright’s record of 82 wins by taking the Lady Michelob in 1982. His last win, his 88th career win, came in 1985 at the United Virginia Bank Classic.

became the first woman to win $1 million on tour, but US Open win eluded her. “It would have changed to become the first woman to take a million for winning the US Open, but it is a consolation that has taken away the pain of not winning a bit,” she commented at the time.

Born in Monahans, a small town in West Texas, she grew up in Jal, New Mexico. His family owned a hardware store and his father held the position of mayor three times.. He started playing golf at the age of 15 when the friends he played tennis with traded their rackets for clubs. I learned on a 9-hole course for employees of El Paso Natural Gas. After winning the New Mexico State Amateur twice, he turned professional at age 19 and joined the LPGA Tour in 1958.

“Kathy was a champion in the truest sense of the word, both on and off the golf course,” said LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan.
