Joel Álvarez from Gijón returns against the Russian Zubaira Tukhugov

Joel Álvarez from Gijón already knows his next rival in the UFC. “The phenomenon” will face off against the Russian Zubaira Tukhugov, a fighter who used to be in the featherweight category (66 kilos), but who, due to his inactivity for more than a year, has been forced to climb a step and now it will be tested in the 70 kilograms division to which Álvarez belongs. The fight will take place in Australia.

The fighter from Gijón has been training in Las Vegas for several months to prepare for a possible confrontation at the end of this year, but several problems with his weight have made it impossible for him to climb into the cage of the American mixed martial arts company. However, it seems that it will finally do so in February 2022, in the show that has been called UFC 284, whose big fight is Makhachev with Volkanovski, as confirmed by sources close to the great North American mixed martial arts promotion.

“The phenomenon” will return to the octagon with the rib already welded. The last time he did it was last February, when he faced Arman Tsarukyan, in a fight that would elevate him as one of the tops in the division in which he competes. However, a premature injury in the first round meant that the man from Gijón could not handle the Georgian’s weapons.

Now, Joel Álvarez’s challenge is a little different. This does not seem to be a fight to get into the ranking, but rather a bridge to take shape and look for another much more forceful rival, although as he himself says, “any fighter can send you to the ground in less than a second.”
