Joel Álvarez already has a rival in the UFC: the man from Gijón will face Zubaira Tukhugov in Australia

Joel Álvarez from Gijón already has his next rival in the UFC. “The phenomenon” will face the Russian Zubaira Tukhugov, a fighter who used to be in the featherweight category (66 kilos), but due to his inactivity for more than a year, he has been forced to climb a step and now it will be tested in the 70 kilograms division to which Álvarez belongs.

The Asturian has been training in Las Vegas for several months ahead of a possible confrontation at the end of this year, but several problems with his weight have made it impossible for him to climb into the cage of the North American company. However, it seems that he will finally do it in February 2022, at UFC 284 (“Makhachev vs Volkanovski”), as confirmed by sources close to the great North American mixed martial arts promotion.

“The phenomenon” will go up to the octagon again with the rib already welded. He hadn’t done it since February of this year, when he faced Arman Tsarukyan, in a fight that would elevate him as one of the tops in the division. However, a premature injury in the first round meant that the man from Gijón could not handle the Georgian’s weapons.

Now, Joel’s challenge is different. This does not seem to be a fight to get into the ranking, but rather a bridge to take shape and look for another much more forceful rival, although as he himself says, “any fighter can send you to the ground in less than a second.”
