Barely twelve days after the death of Miguel Ángel Martín, “El Cura”, the Estudiantes family is once again in mourning. Ion Imanol Rementeria Totorika (Elgoíbar, 1964 -Guipúzcoa-), former player of the collegiate first team between 1983 and 1989, has died at the age of 58. Rementería came to coincide with “El Cura” in the Ramiro de Maeztu team, but before that he had already become a classic of the club since his arrival from the Real Madrid youth system where he shared a team with Guillermo Hernangómez, the father of Juancho and Willy.

The Guipuzcoan pivot, of 2,02became an important player in the rotation of the collegiate team when the “Estu” began to give war to the greats in the eighties. Formed in the Madrid youth academy, it ended up becoming a Madrid basketball classic. In addition to going through the two most important clubs in the Community, he was part of the Collado Villalba, Atletico Madrid, Europolis Las Rozas y Canoe until his retirement in 1993.
“He was a center that the student fans adored for his fame as a belter. His time at the club was the mythical 80s at Magariños, the time when the growth of the club was forged at the hands of the coach Paco Garrido and legends like Pedro Rodriguez, vincent gil, Carlos Montes and of course John Pinone y David Russell”, the Estudiantes revealed in his statement. Rementería was a short, hard-working center who usually came off the bench as part of the collegiate rotation along with another center with similar characteristics, Pedro Rodríguez.

In today’s match between Movistar Estudiantes and Tau Castelló in the LEB Oro League, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Rementería. Coincidentally, the coach of the Castellón team is another classic student basketball player and former Rementería teammate, Juan Antonio Orenga.
