Gladbach: contract expires! Is Yann Sommer going to Inter Milan?

Yann Sommer, goalkeeper of Borussia Moenchengladbach, on November 28, 2022 during the World Cup match Switzerland vs Brazil in Qatar.

Will Yann Sommer (33) also play for Borussia Mönchengladbach next season? The future of the Swiss goalkeeper has been a hotly debated topic among Gladbach fans for months. Sommer is one of the top performers whose contracts expire at the end of June 2023.

Gladbach: Will Yann Sommer move to Inter Milan?

sports director Roland Virkus (56) recently stated that Yann Sommer a contract offer Borussia Monchengladbach have available. However, there is no decision yet.

“Yann was still injured, we all worked together to make his dream come true, and another one WM to play. That’s why we gave him the time.” Virkus in the “Thinking” podcast. “When he comes back here after the tournament and the holiday, there will be a decision.”

Sommer is currently taking part in the World Cup in Qatar with Switzerland. On Tuesday (December 6) the “Swiss” will meet Portugal in the round of 16.

Virkus does not expect clarity until after Sommer’s return in January. Whether the goalkeeper’s decision will be positive for Gladbach remains to be seen. The manager put the chances of an extension at “fifty-fifty”.

So it’s quite possible that Sommer will switch to the new season on a free transfer and play at another club. He could possibly Inter Milan mean. According to the TV channel “Sky Italia”, the Italian club is looking for a new goalkeeper.

The longtime number one Samir Handanovic (38) is expected to end his career after the season. This season, the Slovenian lost his regular place to André Onana (26), who moved to Italy from Ajax Amsterdam last summer.

Now Inter should be looking for a competitor for the Cameroonian. In addition to Sommer, the Turk Altay Bayindir (24) from Fenerbahce Istanbul is said to have attracted interest.

Roland Virkus had hinted in the podcast that Sommer might want to “win another championship”. The keeper won the Swiss Super League four times in a row with FC Basel before coming to Gladbach in 2014.

Inter Milan is nineteen-time Italian champions, most recently the “Nerazzurri” won the “Scudetto” in 2021. In 2022, the club won the trophy for the eighth time.

However, it can at least be doubted whether Sommer will enter into a competitive struggle. For years he has been a fixture in the Bundesliga and in the Swiss national team.

There he now has an up-and-coming competitor in Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel (24). So if Sommer also wants to be in the “Nati” goal until Euro 2024, he would probably have to continue playing regularly.

This issue will probably only calm down in January, when the 33-year-old announces his contract decision. Until then, Gladbach fans will have to tremble as to whether the crowd favorite will continue to wear the jersey with the diamond in the future.
