Mick Schumacher’s exit from Formula 1 caused waves. Now his former team boss explains the reasons for the separation. Günther Steiner’s sentences say a lot about Schumacher’s reputation in the racing team.

MNick Schumacher is looking for a job after two years in Formula 1. The future of the 23-year-old could be employment as a test driver or pilot in another racing series. Not an unusual occurrence in the fast-moving world of motorsport. Unless you bear the name Schumacher and are the son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher. Then such a career break is observed more closely.

The most recent statements by Günther Steiner, Mick Schumacher’s former team boss at Haas, are therefore also of interest. In an interview with “Formula1.com”, the 57-year-old official explained why Schumacher had no future with the US racing team and lost the duel for the second cockpit for the coming season against Nico Hülkenberg.

“We’re the youngest team and the past two years haven’t gone particularly well for us. Unfortunately, we lost a bit of the momentum that we had in 2018 and 2019,” explained Steiner. “That’s why we asked ourselves the question: How do we get the team back on its feet?” The team leaders came to the conclusion that a new impetus behind the wheel was the solution.

A decision that ultimately cost Schumacher his job. Steiner now justified the step, but left a lot of room for interpretation: “Mick did a good job in his two years. But we had to carry him a little – and we need someone to carry us.” In order to give the talent time and see whether he could take on this role, the team decided on Hulkenberg late.

Schumacher built several accidents

In fact, just a few days before the last race of the past season in Abu Dhabi, Haas announced that Schumacher would be parted. The son of the record world champion had hinted at his potential several times, but he also regularly had costly accidents, which put an additional strain on the racing team’s already tight budget.

“We waited a long time because we hadn’t decided yet. And we didn’t have to because the driver market was developing in our direction. We didn’t have to worry that someone would take Nico (Hulkenberg; Anm. d. Red.) snaps away,” Steiner offered insights into the decision-making process: “I think we’ve now made a decision that’s best for the team and will get us back to where we want to be.”

Schumacher was obviously not expected to do this. The next step in his young career could lead him to Mercedes. There he is being discussed as a test driver.
