Former baseball player Gates reaches second round

Former baseball player Leonard Gates caused an upset at the Darts World Cup in London and reached the second round.

The 52-year-old defeated the Dutchman Geert Nentjes 3-1 on Monday evening and thus achieved his first individual success on his debut. In round two, the Texan will face Englishman Stephen Bunting.

Mensur Suljovic also enters the tournament during this phase, meeting Mike de Decker in the afternoon session on Thursday. The Belgian knocked out Jeff Smith 3-1 in the opening round.

Gates describes his career as follows: “I definitely had ambitions to be a Major League Baseball player. It’s relatively easy to get in, but it’s difficult to stay there. So for me it was like, now what?”

In the last game of the afternoon session, Simon Whitlock returns against the world number 17. Jose de Sousa lost a 2-0 lead in the set and was defeated 2-3 in the end.
