For Netflix, sports rights are not really interesting

SVOD services have entered the field of sports by broadcasting certain events. But that doesn’t seem like an end in itself for Netflix, which prefers to focus on other things.

Prime Video has Ligue 1 in France and other rights abroad, and other platforms have also entered this niche, such as Apple with baseball. Netflix is resisting it for the moment even if it seems that the firm has been interested in Formula 1 in the United States for a while.

Video games and live shows as a vehicle for growth

But Netflix no longer wants to get into this niche, if we are to believe the statements of Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix. At the UBS Global TMT conference in New York, Ted Sarandos said the platform didn’t see the opportunity to make a profit from sporting events, as reported Digital TV.

He even goes further by saying that the platform could double in volume without sports, in particular thanks to video games or certain other live events such as stand-up shows which are broadcast worldwide, such as that of Chris Rock which is scheduled for early 2023.

As far as video games are concerned, these are not really successful at the moment but Netflix wants to see much bigger and the Los Gatos firm should totally launch into cloud gaming in the coming months, with much larger titles than are currently available.
