FIA bans innovative Mercedes front wing | GPToday.net

The Mercedes team introduced a striking front wing in Austin with an important function for the so-called slot gap separators. In the end, Mercedes did not use the front wing for fear of a protest from the competition. The FIA has now intervened and it is not allowed to drive with this type of front wings in 2023.

Mercedes introduced a new front wing at the Circuit of the Americas. The wing caused more dirty air, but this should be prevented by the new technical rules that came into effect this year. Mercedes’ competition mainly pointed to the closing gap separators. According to Mercedes, these elements ensure that the airflows are better guided along the tires and the side of the car. According to the rules, these types of elements could only be installed for mechanical or structural reasons.

However, the FIA has now intervened in this matter. The motorsport federation has intervened and has adapted the technical regulations. The gray areas are now closed and the Mercedes front wing is therefore banned. It has been decided that no aerodynamic advantage may be gained from the slot gap separators. Mercedes has therefore never used the wing and that will not happen again.
