Feliciano López announces that he will retire in 2023

Feliciano López has reached that critical moment that every athlete goes through: deciding that what one has done throughout his life has to end. Thus, the Toledo has announced on his social networks that he says goodbye to 2022 by saying goodbye to tennis.

«The dream of any tennis player is to be able to say goodbye on a tennis court and for this reason, I am going to play some tournaments next year to end my career. The idea is to play some tournaments that, for different reasons, have meant something important in the last 20 years.”

«I always believed that there was life after tennis, but as the moment approaches, you begin to realize how much I will miss it. Tennis has given me everything in life. Much more than that 5-year-old boy could imagine when his father put a wooden racket in his hands”, continues the tennis player, who has a special memory and thanks to all the people who have accompanied him: his father, his mother, Vitorino, his partner and his son.

López (Toledo, 1981), who will play some tournaments this season to say goodbye on the court, has won a good booty of prizes in his racket bag: he has won seven ATP titles (Vienna 2004, Johannesburg 2010, Eastbourne 2013 and 2014, Gstaad 2016 and Queens 2017 and 2019) and has played eleven finals. In addition, he propelled Spain in the Davis Cup to achieve five Salad Bowls (2004, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2019). In doubles, he won six titles, among which Roland Garros in 2016, with Marc López, stands out.

Its best ranking was in 2015, when it reached twelfth position. He has won 503 matches and more than 18 million euros in prize money. He has a very difficult figure to match, since he has participated in all the Grand Slams since the beginning of his career: 79 consecutive participations in tournaments of this caliber. In recent years he has combined his profession on the slopes with directing the Mutua Madrid Open.
