FC St. Pauli parted ways with coach Timo Schultz (45) in the middle of the Winter World Cup in Qatar. This was announced by the second division club on Tuesday morning. The neighborhood club has not yet presented a permanent successor. The training will initially be led by Fabian Hürzeler (29), who was previously Schultz’s assistant.
The reasons for the split are obvious. After a desolate first half of the season, Hamburg are only in 15th place – tied on points with 16th and 17th place. Only the better goal difference saves the team from a direct relegation zone. But not only the first half of the season was bad. Already in the second half of the previous season, and thus the entire calendar year 2021, the team fell short of expectations.
But not only sporting reasons should have played a role. The relationship between Schultz and Andreas Bornemann (51), the sporting director, was not the best. The fans were clearly on the side of the trainer and blamed Bornemann for the bad transfer policy. The accusation: there is a lack of quality everywhere. In addition to a striker, there are also good defenders.
Bornemann on the Schultz-Aus: “We have long recognized various patterns in the sporting problems, including the fatal away weakness, a lack of balance between defense and offense, a lack of further development, but also the inability to turn games after going behind.” That’s why they want to use the particularly long break caused by the Winter World Cup in Qatar to reposition themselves.
Curious: In addition to Schultz, his assistant Loic Favé (29) also has to go – but Hürzeler is allowed to stay. He also started with Schultz in July 2020.
