Capello backs Deschamps’ handling of Benzema case at World Cup

The Italian coach felt that Didier Deschamps had made the best decision by parting ways with Karim Benzema, injured before the start of the competition.

Did Didier Deschamps and his staff do well to ask Karim Benzema to leave the group of the France team after noting the attacker’s thigh injury before the World Cup? The question is debated with regard to the speed with which the player recovered (he played a friendly match with Real Madrid on December 23).

But for Fabio Capello, former AC Milan coach, Deschamps made the right decision. He explained himself on this subject in the Corriere della Sera. “Yes I understand it. I did the same thing with Savicevic before the Intercontinental Cup final in 1993 (with AC Milan against São Paulo, Milan lost 3-2). It was only the morning of the match that I learned that he was fit to play when I had already prepared everything with Raducioiu. Out of respect, I didn’t let him play.
