Basketball: The ever-growing interest at the Polyvalente de Normandin

Basketball continues its momentum in Lac-Saint-Jean. At Polyvalente de Normandin, more and more young people are registering for this extracurricular activity.

Mathis Gauthier, who is the head coach of all the school’s teams, points out that registrations are surpassing each year.

“Last year, we had a record number of registrations and we even had to add a team. This year, the registrations were even better,” he says.

Thus, the school still has four teams this year, two at the Benjamin level (secondary 1-2) and two at the Juvenile level (secondary 4-5). Unlike last year, there is no Cadet level team (secondary 3), due to the lack of players for this category.

“Not only do we see that there is a lot of interest among young people coming from elementary school and joining the basketball program, but we also notice a higher interest among those who have been in high school for years. We have several new Juvenile level players registering for the first time! »

It is always difficult for Mathis Gauthier to explain this wave of popularity for this sport in recent years. However, he notices that elementary school children are learning more and more about basketball.

“Everywhere we see a great development for this sport and it’s good to see that. The future is promising, especially with the Alma Academy which has just been set up and which intends to create a uniform structure throughout the Lac. »

Good start

The season is still very young, but already, the head coach of the Kodiaks of the Polyvalente de Normandin likes what he sees from his two Benjamin level teams.

“We haven’t lost yet in three games, so it’s off to a good start. Our young people are determined, we really have a great gang. »

Among the Kodiaks, there is a lot of emphasis on group identity and a sense of belonging. Thus, the two clubs always train together, even if they are two very distinct teams.

The same also applies to the two Juvenile level teams. Moreover, these two teams are also off to a good start this season.

“The strength of all our clubs is team spirit. It’s cliché to say, but everyone gets along so well, we communicate well and that helps us a lot. I expect a big season for each of the teams. »
