Araski surprises Spar Girona (62-64)

Surprise in Fontajau. After a few days of rest due to the national team stoppage, Araski defeated Uni, turning a game they had lost at halftime. The locals started with a brilliant first half and ran out of gas in the final stretch of the game, an action that the Basques took advantage of to turn the score around and scratch a hard-fought victory in Fontajau. Uni has no rest and next Sunday visits Jairis in the match that will stage the reunion with Eric Surís.

Rebekah Gardner seems to have had a good few days of rest, the American has sealed a 3+1 that has left her opponents cold two minutes after the meeting began. The Uni didn’t want any surprises and the players were unstoppable with quick transitions and generating a multitude of open shots that allowed them to take an early lead of eight points (17-9).

Madelen Urrieta’s screams could be heard from the upper part of the pavilion. The Basque coach asked her players for intensity and Diarra responded from the low post by fighting and getting second options thanks to the offensive rebound. When it seemed that Araski was cutting distances, Laia Flores appeared with confidence from the perimeter with two consecutive actions that have once again boosted the locals on the scoreboard. The visitors reacted with a partial 0-6 and Bernat Canut stopped the duel. Tolo moved elegantly under a hoop with a basket that beautified the floor and Alarcón frustrated the local inspiration from the triple. The exchange of baskets was constant and allowed the visitors to go into the break six points behind Spar.

The locals have lowered the pressure in the third quarter and Atkinson has appeared to complicate matters for the Girona players. Laura Pardo, who announced her retirement last year, has reappeared for a few minutes to cover Holopainen’s last-minute absence. After a few moments of local uncertainty in attack, Rebekah Gardner cleared the score with a layup shot that Atkinson answered with a three-pointer on the horn and two free throws to place his team within two (47-45 ). Cornelius has dissipated the delicacy of the moment with a bomb on Navarro, but Araski has grabbed the premises.

A triple by Asurmendi at the start of the last quarter tied the score (54-54). Atkinson boosted the visitors from the staff and Araújo returned equity. When the game was tied, Diarra drew oil by forcing a staff to Tolo and Asurmendi put his finger on the wound by taking an offensive rebound and scoring a triple that placed the maximum difference in favor of the visitors (60-64) . Gardner took the lead by cutting the distance (62-64) with 45 seconds left and Spar Girona lost the ball when they had possession to tie the game. Araski played wisely by exhausting possession and Binta Drammeh failed to materialize the triple to turn the score around in the last gasp of the game.
