At the Gallur Sports Center in Madrid, the final phase of the Absolute Spanish Judo Championship was held last Saturday. A particularly tough competition, due to its proximity to the final classification for the Olympic Games, in Paris 2024.

The judoka from Club Kyoto Alejandro Escobar, weighing 81 kg, after proclaiming himself champion of Castilla y León in the first phase and runner-up in the West Sector in the second phase, had qualified with great enthusiasm.

His first qualifying match in Madrid, he faced David Ponce from Madrid with whom he had a great performance, scoring a withering Ippon, which left Madrid out of classification. It was his second fight against Pablo Sánchez from Extremadura, whom he could not win, waiting to enter the playoffs.

The play-off, he faced the Galician Giorgi Akimidze who had already surpassed him in the sector, and repeated the result, so he had to settle for 9th place in the final standings of the Absolute Championship.

Agudo competed for Galicia

In the women’s section, Daniela Agudo from Leon, weighing 70 kg, who competed for Galicia, after winning the Autonomous Championship and later in the Sector phase, reached the Spanish Championship, with high expectations. In the first match against Paula Belbe from Madrid, she won, only to lose in the second match against Begoña Sotillo, also from Madrid. In the playoffs, she beat Rosbeily Salas from the Canary Islands and then beat María Rey from Galicia. In the fight for the bronze, she lost to the Valencian Isabel Puche, qualifying in 5th place in the final classification.

Good performance by both people from Leon, taking into account the added difficulty on this occasion, as it was held a year and a half after the Olympic Games.
