2024 Presidents Cup: Mike Weir will captain the international team in Montreal

Canadian Mike Weir will captain the international squad for the 2024 President’s Cup which will be presented at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec for the first time since 2007.

Weir, Canada’s most decorated male player, has appeared at the event five times and served as assistant captain on three occasions. However, it will be a first experience as captain.

The 52-year-old Ontarian has won eight PGA Tour events in his career – including the prestigious Masters Tournament in 2003.

Weir was an assistant in the last edition in 2022, which the international team lost 17.5 to 12.5 against the United States. He will try to lead the internationals to a first title in the competition in 15 occasions.

“The Presidents Cup has become a huge part of my career, so to be here right now as captain of the 2024 International Team is surreal,” Weir said in a statement.

“Looking back, I have so many incredible memories associated with that event, whether it was my debut in 2000, my singles win over Tiger in 2007 at Royal Montreal, watching Ernie create the Shield in 2019 and then to see Trevor build on that momentum in 2022. As I look forward to the 2024 Cup, I couldn’t be happier to lead the international team home to Canada for this which promises to be the experience of a lifetime. »

The first Canadian to enter the tournament, he has a winning record of 13-9-2 at the tournament.

“With Mike Weir as captain of the 2024 International Team, internationals will continue to rise through his unwavering support of his players and the Presidents Cup,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “With his pedigree as a player combined with his pedigree with the Presidents Cup as both a player and assistant captain, Mike is the right leader at the right time as the Presidents Cup returns to Montreal. As an icon in his country, he will certainly have the full support of Canadian fans to give the international team a clear advantage on the field.

The Royal Montreal club, founded in 1873, is the oldest in North America. The Blue course was developed by architect Dick Wilson and updated by Rees Jones in 2004 and 2005. In addition to the Presidents Cup, the RBC Canadian Open has been staged there 10 times, but not since 2014.
