KOMPAS.com – Group D of the 2022 World Cup Tunisia vs France was marred by controversy over Antoine Griezmann’s disallowed goal. The French federation is said to have lodged a formal protest with FIFA.
Wahbi Khazri’s only goal (58′) made the difference in the Tunisia vs France match at the Education City Stadium, Doha, Qatar, Wednesday (30/11/2022).
Tunisia won 1-0 and recorded their first victory in the history of the duel against France.
France, which still qualified for the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup as Group D winners, did not accept the defeat to Tunisia.
The Rooster Team was furious because referee Matthew Conger disallowed Antoine Griezmann’s equalizer in the 90+8 minute.

Matthew Conger thinks Griezmann is in a position offside before welcoming the ball from Aurelien Tchouameni’s post which turned after hitting the head of the Tunisian defender, Montassar Talbi.
The assessment of whether Montassar Talbi intentionally or not grabbed Tchouameni’s stomach ball is absolutely the referee’s decision.
Referee Matthew Conger, who reviewed the VAR for a long time, considered that Talbi did not fully intend to block the ball sent by Tchouameni, so that Griezmann was still counted in position offside.
The thing at issue is that Conger just conducted a review after the final whistle of the Tunisia vs France match was sounded.
Seconds before blowing the final whistle, Conger also let Tunisia do it kickoffwhich means allowing the game to restart, so according to VAR protocol, it is not possible to review the incident offside.
Conger’s actions were deemed to have violated IFAB (International Football Association Board) rules point number 10 regarding the VAR protocol.
“We drafted a complaint after Antoine Griezmann’s goal, in our opinion, was incorrectly disallowed,” read a statement from the French Football Federation, FFF, on Thursday (1/12/2022).

“This complaint must be filed 24 hours after the final whistle,” the FFF statement continued.
Based on the VAR protocol in the IFAB rules, the referee is said to be unable to review after sounding the final whistle of the match.
“If the game ends and restarts, the referee is not allowed to conduct a review, except in cases of mistaken identity of players or potential red cards related to violence, spitting, biting or insulting behavior that is very rude and offensive,” read the rules in IFAB.
If there is a violation of the rules, the French media, RMC Sport judging that the final result of Tunisia vs France in the 2022 World Cup could change.
“This could give France a draw, as well as erase the inaugural victory of the Carthaginian Eagles (nicknamed Tunisia) over France,” wrote RMC Sport.
The final result against Tunisia actually didn’t really matter that much for France, who still advanced to the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup as the winner of Group D thanks to a collection of six points.
Conversely, the victory over France failed to lead Tunisia to the knockout rounds. The Carthaginian eagle is only in third place with a collection of four points, one level below Australia which earned 6 points.
