At the World Cup in Qatar, the best nations in the world fight for the crown of football. If you want to see all the games, you have to subscribe to a pay station. Here you will find all the information about the broadcasts, broadcasters and experts.

WOwing to the special nature of this year’s winter staging, the last World Cup final was four and a half years ago. 21.45 million viewers watched the match between France and Croatia (4:2) on ARD.

Also for the football World Cup, which will be played in Qatar from November 20th to December 18th, the broadcasters have once again played big. This time, if you don’t want to miss a minute, you have to spend money.

World Cup on free TV: Which channels show the games?

Not all 64 games of the tournament can be seen on free TV. Deutsche Telekom has secured the exclusive broadcasting rights with its Magenta TV service. All games are broadcast here. A subscription currently costs ten euros a month in the cheapest package.

Football fans who don’t want to spend any money don’t go away empty-handed. After all, ARD and ZDF show 48 games, including all German games, the opening game, the semi-finals and the final. In addition to the linear offer, all channels also offer live streams.

What kick-off times do I have to be prepared for?

It starts on November 20 at 5 p.m. with the game between hosts Qatar and Ecuador. From then on, the group stage will kick off at 11:00am, 2:00pm, 5:00pm and 8:00pm. The parallel games of the last group game day will take place at 4 p.m. or 8 p.m.

These two kick-off times then also apply to the round of 16 and quarter-finals. The semi-finals start at 8 p.m. each day. The final kicks off at 4 p.m. on December 18. The game for third place will take place the day before at the same kick-off time.

Who broadcasts the German World Cup games?

All German games run in the paid offer on Magenta TV. The division is already known at the two leading public broadcasters. The ARD broadcasts on 23.11. the German start against Japan (2 p.m.), ZDF the second game on November 27th. against Spain (8 p.m.). The ARD is then for the group finals on 1.12. against Costa-Rica (8 p.m.) again on the train.

Ex-national player Toni Kroos will analyze the game between Germany and Spain together with B. Kerner. Anett Sattler, Sascha Bandermann and Anna Kraft will also moderate. The team of experts also includes ex-national player Tabea Kemme, Hertha managing director Fredi Bobic, ex-Bayern professional Javi Martinez, Gladbach professional Lars Stindl, South America expert Martin Demichelis and referee expert Patrick Ittrich. Jan Henkel presents the tactical analyzes together with former Bundesliga coach Manuel Baum and Tobias Schweinsteiger. Anna Sara Lange is on site as a field reporter. Thomas Wagner reports from the DFB quarter.

At ARD there is a clear division of tasks. Julia Scharf and expert Thomas Broich accompany the early games on the first four days of broadcasting. Otherwise, Alexander Bommes from the studio in Mainz will guide you through the programs. He is supported by national goalkeeper Almuth Schult, former world champion Sami Khedira and Thomas Hitzlsperger, who was already in action at the 2018 World Cup, as experts. Esther Sedlaczek and Bastian Schweinsteiger then take over live from Qatar for the “Match of the Day”. The German national team accompanies Lea Wagner.

Kathrin Müller-Hohenstein and Jochen Breyer alternate on ZDF. They also guide you through the programs from the headquarters in Mainz. As experts, the women’s national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg and the ex-national players Sandro Wagner and Per Mertesacker analyze what is happening. Christoph Kramer will also support the team after he was not nominated by Hansi Flick. Ex-Bundesliga referee Manuel Graefe will classify rule questions and topics related to the referees. The German team accompanies Sven Voss.

Who is commenting on the games?

The voices of the World Cup will be familiar to most football fans. Because Magenta TV has the most games and wants to offer a conference for the parallel group games on the last day, the commentator team is correspondingly large. It is led by Wolff-Christoph Fuss. Marco Hagemann, Jan Platte, Jonas Friedrich, Markus Höhner, Christina Rann, Christian Straßburger, Benni Zander and Alexander Klich comment on this.

Christina Graf will be the first woman to comment on World Cup games on ARD. In addition, there are the experienced Gerd Gottlob and Florian Naß. Tom Bartels, who was on the microphone at the final of the last German title in 2014, is allowed to play the final again. ZDF relies on Claudia Neumann, Oliver Schmidt, Martin Schneider and Béla Réthy.

Magenta TV in particular offers a large number of additional offers. A tactics feed with its own commentary is offered on a second channel, while two social media stars and their guests follow the game as a so-called reaction on a third channel. At the end of a broadcast day, Ruth Hofmann and Jonas Hummels look back on the day of the World Cup together with guests in the format of “overtime”.
