World Cup 2022 in Qatar: Uli Hoeneß starts on DFB! | Sports

The third day of the World Cup – not only because of the German bankruptcy is the mood in the basement. The bandage scandal and of course the unjust state of Qatar as the venue don’t ensure football euphoria.

Uli Hoeneß (70) is worried about the future development of football because of the desert World Cup. “The World Cup, as it is currently presented, will definitely not be a success, that’s already clear, and it will definitely damage football as a whole,” he said on RTL.

The honorary president of Bayern is mainly concerned with the low interest of the fans in the tournament. According to Hoeneß, enthusiasm for football overall could decrease.

He explains, “If you look at the ratings, if you see people’s enthusiasm for this World Cup, you can already see the damage.”

The ratings were in the basement on the first few days – significantly lower than four years ago at the World Cup in Russia. USA v Wales had only seen 4.349 million TV viewers.

He also has an opinion on the binding scandal. According to Hoeneß, the DFB lacks the necessary courage: “The DFB leaned too far out of the window with the announcement that it would be consistent and follow through with the issue. And they didn’t do that in the end.”

He further says: “They didn’t have the courage to stand up to FIFA. That would have been urgently needed, because for me Gianni Infantino is a major disaster for world football, and it would have been a wonderful opportunity to show him: up to here and no further.”

Hoeneß believes that a boycott or early departure from the tournament would be the wrong way to go, despite the ongoing criticism of host Qatar: “For years there was enough time to address things and exercise the power to do so. I don’t think the European associations have realized the power they really have.”
