World Cup 2022 in Qatar: English seventh division team wants to bring Haaland

English seventh division side Ashton United FC defeated their neighbors Bamber Bridge FC 3-0 at the weekend. That’s a compelling mention in these great days of football as said club Ashton United intends to put a stop to a misery. Namely, that the biggest players don’t play during the biggest tournament.

World footballer Benzema (France) and Mané (Senegal), who came second in the election, reported being injured at short notice. A third prominent colleague was not even planned for Qatar: Erling Haaland owes this to the fact that he and his Norwegian teammates messed up the World Cup qualification. Some should, but cannot. The other could, but must not. And that’s where seventh division side Ashton United FC come into play.

Because Haaland has been unemployed for a longer period of time at his employer Manchester City due to the Qatar World Cup, Ashton’s club officials have drawn their own conclusions. “We would like to help by keeping Erling fit,” says team manager Michael Clegg on the club’s website: “It makes more sense than if he played golf for six weeks. We think he fits in well with us and himself will fit in very well with our team.”

Do Ashton’s have a bird? They have – a robin. In the club crest. There have often been fun offers from amateur clubs to professionals. In this case, those responsible for the club noticeably try to be serious. “It’s not a joke, we’re waiting for an answer,” assured the club on Twitter.

There is still time for answers, the World Cup has just started – and Ashton United will play four league games before the final shortly before Christmas. Next Saturday, 16.00 CET, they face Lancaster FC away from home. If necessary, Haaland could warm up in a port city in north-west England with a robin on his chest for the seventh division league game. Alternatively, he could stay at home and watch the World Cup. At 2pm, Saudi Arabia plays Poland, likely with Robert Lewandowski, one of the few remaining world-class strikers.
