World Cup 2022: German player’s wife: “I often feel alone with my son” | Sports

She gives a very special insight behind the scenes …

Christina Ginter has been with her Matthias for seven years. In an interview with “Bunte” she revealed that life as a player’s wife is not always sunshine.

She explains: “The schedule is incredibly full, my husband is not only gone on the day of the game, but the day before. And the day after, he has to regenerate. In principle, if we play two games in a week, we only have one day off for the family together. But I’m lucky: When Matthias comes home, he helps me clean up the kitchen. And put our son to bed. I don’t feel like a single parent, but often alone with my son.”

At the World Cup, Christina Ginter, like Ann-Kathrin Götze, Izabel Goulart and Lina Kimmich, is there to support her husband during the tournament. After the Japan debacle, the players’ women entourage was allowed to Overnight at the national team hotel.

In the following, Christina Ginter explains what her duties as a player’s wife are: “We support and motivate our men. You live in a bubble, so it’s good to get out for four hours and meet the family. And if there are defeats, I build Matthias up again.”

On the other days when they can’t see each other, she has to switch to the phone. This is not easy, especially for their son. “At that age, Matteo still doesn’t understand why his dad has been away for so long.”

Matthias and Christina Ginter have known each other since they were children in Freiburg, but they only got together later.

They married in 2018, and their son Matteo was born a year later.
