FIFA warning system sounds alarm about Qatar games

How honest will this World Cup be?

It’s practically an open secret that little Qatar owes the hosting of the world’s biggest football tournament to generous financial donations to Fifa officials.

Now there are apparently also the first doubts about the decisions on the lawn.

One day before the start of the World Cup, the British “ Daily Mail“That one of Fifa’s partner companies, which works with the world association on the integrity of football, has reported anomalies. Specifically, it is about “an unusually high number of penalties” awarded to the host country’s team in preparatory games.

The large number of penalties should have possibly ensured that the Qatari can complete a positive preparation for the World Cup and start the tournament with confidence.

According to the report, Qatar have played far more friendly matches than other nations since July. The team is said to have played seven games in total. Five of these are said to have taken place behind closed doors. The Qatari team went undefeated four times before suffering a 3-0 defeat against the Croatia U23s.

Because the games were not broadcast and no visitors – not even sponsors – were present at the games, the allegations cannot be verified, the newspaper reports. Not even the Fifa partners have enough data on the games.

Qatar will play the opening game of the World Cup against Ecuador on Sunday (5 p.m), also meet the Netherlands and Senegal in Group A. The Qatari ruling family hopes that their national team will reach the round of 16.

The hosts are underdogs but made a mark by winning the 2019 Asian Cup. Nine of the eleven starting XI players from the desert state’s greatest success in football history are also at the World Cup. Among them the star of the Qatar team: attacker Akram Afif (25). The Qatari most valuable player with a market value of 5.5 million euros has been playing for the national team since 2015. He scored 24 goals in 83 games. Coach is the Spaniard Félix Sánchez.
