After the dreary draw, England’s coach is under criticism

The English do not live up to their role as favorites against the USA. The reaction was immediate: yelling whistles from the English fans and criticism of national coach Southgate. Above all, one personality divides the football nation.
In the motherland of football, criticism comes up faster than anywhere else. Gareth Southgate is used to it. The national coach simply let the loud whistles and the criticism of England’s footballers roll off. “Obviously I want the fans to be happy and smiling. We didn’t make it today. But our goal is to qualify, we have three games to do that. You have to stay calm in these moments, ”said Southgate after the dreary 0-0 draw against the USA in Al-Khour on Friday evening. In contrast to the strong 6:2 against Iran, the Three Lions offered playful lean food this time. The fans whistled loudly at the end of the game.
However, the draw was enough to defend first place in the preliminary round group B. “You have to show different faces in the course of a tournament. I’m sure there will be a lot of noise around this performance,” said ex-pro Southgate. But it is also the case that not many teams scored nine points in a World Cup preliminary round. If runners-up England wins against Wales on Tuesday (8 p.m.), the group victory is perfect. Even a defeat with a difference of three goals would be enough to advance.
Criticism came from former goalscorer Michael Owen, who appears unhappy with Southgate’s selection. “I’m amazed that we’ve fielded 14 players so far, but our most talented player is still on the bench,” Owen wrote on Twitter during the game, probably alluding to Manchester City’s Phil Foden. Foden was then not substituted on, which Southgate later justified with tactical considerations.
World class player Foden only on the bench
“We didn’t think that was a game for Phil in the middle. We thought Hendo (Jordan Henderson) could help us so we could give Jude Bellingham a break too. We thought Marcus Rashford’s pace would help us,” said Southgate late on Friday evening, explaining why he did not want the Manchester City midfielder in the second group duel.
Foden was actually expected to be up front in a 3-4-3 formation alongside captain Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling. But Southgate is currently operating with a 4-2-3-1 system at the World Cup, in which Mason Mount fills the role of playmaker.
There is currently no room for Foden, although according to the specialist portal “transfermarkt.de” he is currently one of the five most valuable footballers in the world with a market value of 110 million euros. The 22-year-old was on the bench for 90 minutes against the USA, having only been given a 20-minute cameo in the 6-2 win against Iran. But Southgate made it clear: “We love Phil, he’s a great player.”
