The Football Federation of Ukraine said in a statement on its website that it “is taking into account the information about systematic human rights violations in Iran”. “They are contrary to the principles and values within the FIFA statutes,” it sounded. Iran would also supply Russia with drones that attack Ukraine. The Iranians deny that.

Last week, Sergeui Palkine, the general manager of top club Shakhtar Donetsk, also suggested keeping Iran out of the World Cup. He wanted to replace the country with Ukraine itself. The Football Association of Ukraine did not express that wish to replace Iran.

Federal president Andriy Pavelko asked in an interview with German broadcaster ARD last weekend that Russia and Iran should be excluded from FIFA membership.

Iran’s opening match at the World Cup is scheduled for November 21, against England.
