One year after the symbolic laying of the first stone, the progress of construction work on the Porte de la Chapelle Arena (18th arrondissement) now makes it possible to prefigure what will eventually be the enclosure called to receive in 2024 the Olympic competitions in badminton and rhythmic gymnastics, as well as the Paralympic events in para-badminton and para-weightlifting.

A summer 2021, the start of the construction site of the new Parisian multifunctional enclosure, in the North of the capitalhad in turn led to the gradual demolition of warehouses and car parks, before the necessary earthmoving operations were undertaken to prepare the ground.

Subsequently, the foundations were built, and the shell operations gradually rolled out.

Today, the construction of the low-carbon concrete walls of the structure gives an overview of the final rendering of the work which, in addition to the main hall with a capacity of 8,000 seats, will also include two annexed gymnasiums with, for each of them, a field of 44 meters by 24 and, for one of them, stands 750 places.

Beyond these spaces intended for hosting sporting events – including matches of the Paris Basket – and cultural, and independently of the planned large-scale urban redevelopmentthe Arena will also have reception facilities, a 2,600 m² program dedicated to local shops and leisure activities, as well as a car park with 200 spaces for light vehicles and 200 spaces for two-wheelers.

In the main part of the future arena, the positioning of the future bleachers is beginning to be noticeable, while on the secondary part of the enclosure, the floor rises gradually, integrating within it some of the wooden elements that will characterize eventually the enclosure.

The latter will indeed have some 400 tons of wood distributed in various places of the building, whether at the level of the frames and the bleachers of the two gymnasiums, the cladding of the facades, or even for the interior layout of the main hall. .

The site – which covers an area of 26,000 m² – currently mobilizes no less than 6 cranes, including 4 for the main part of the future arena, and several hundred workers under the supervision of Bouygues Building Ile-de-Francewith the assistance of architectural firms SCAU et NP2F.

In the coming months, efforts will focus on the continuation of the structural work in what will constitute the interior of the various spaces, then on the elevation of the framework and the roofs which – upon complete delivery at the end of summer 2023 – will give pride of place to renewable energies and resource management.

The arena – whose name outside the JO period will be Adidas – Porte de la Chapelle Arena in accordance with we recorded by the City of Paris with the famous German equipment manufacturer – will thus have 1,800 m² of photovoltaic panels, 6,900 m² of green roof, and 1,700 m² of planted terraces.

The concern for durability is also found in the use of compressed earth bricks from the excavated material from the construction site of the Grand Paris Expressor in the installation of recycled cotton for the insulation of the main room.

In this same room, the design of the 8,000 seats will also meet environmental requirements, with the announced reuse of 70 tonnes of plastic waste.
