L’Italia is a candidate to host the Europeans 2023 football match: the process of submitting the application documents has been completed. Now all that remains is to wait for the definitive assignment of the maximum continental review, scheduled for the autumn of next year.
The Figcthe Italian Football Federation, has successfully concluded the process of transmission of the documents that form the Preliminary Bid Dossiernecessary for nations applying for the European Championships. Eleven cities are involved in the dossier, destined to host the event if it were assigned to Italy.
Our country has already hosted the European Championships on two occasions. The first time dates back to 1968, when the Azzurri won in the final repeated at the Olympic stadium against Yugoslavia. Twelve years later, however, it was then West Germany to become European champion in Italy, beating Belgium in the final. On that occasion, the national team came in fourth place, losing the “finalina” on penalties against Czechoslovakia.
Ironically, Germany also won the last major football tournament staged in Italy: i World Cup of 1990. Also on that occasion, the national team came one step away from the final, only to then finish in third place by virtue of the success over England in what is also called the “consolation final”.
