Suriname winner Inter Guyanese Games

Suriname won the Inter Guyanese Games (IGS) in Guyana on Sunday. The three-day tournament concluded in the evening with a closing ceremony at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Suriname was crowned overall champion despite Guyana winning five of the nine sports events. The nine events were athletics, badminton, cycling, volleyball, tennis, football, table tennis, swimming and basketball

After the scores were added up, Suriname came to 110 points, narrowly trailing host country Guyana by two points. French Guiana, which only participated in two parts, achieved 26 points.

Guyana won Cycling (men), Soccer (women), Swimming (men and women), Athletics (men and women) and Table Tennis (men and women). Suriname took top honors in Badminton (men and women), Tennis (men and women), Basketball (men and women) and Volleyball (men and women).

Crucially, French Guiana took second place to Suriname in both men’s and women’s basketball, leaving Guyana to settle for third. In the end, basketball turned out to be decisive for the big winner.

Held for the first time since 2017, IGS attracted more than 400 athletes and officials, the most in tournament history.
