Sonck approaches the World Cup prediction more like a game. “I just always go by my gut. But you always have surprises that no one sees coming, like Croatia during the last World Cup.”
Cameroon came 3rd in this year’s Africa Cup and also delivered the top scorer of the tournament with Aboubakar.
Will that surprise be Cameroon? Sonck completed a 5-1 win in the match against Serbia. “I read that Samuel Eto’o said Cameroon was going to be world champions. If he says that, I’ll go along with it and predict a 5-1 win for them (laughs).”
The group stage for the host country will be less rosy according to his prediction. “Qatar will do its best, but I cannot imagine that it will suddenly do crazy things in terms of football. A country like Ecuador in the opening match has more quality.”
