The German national team has their backs to the wall after just one game at the World Cup. Hans-Dieter Flick speaks the day after the defeat in Japan. The national coach indicates changes in the defense.
Nfter the embarrassing 1:2 (1:0) against Japan, the German national team is threatened with being eliminated from the World Cup against Spain on Sunday. The Iberians, for their part, beat Costa Rica 7-0. The day after the unexpected defeat, national coach Hans-Dieter Flick answered the questions. What did he and the team do wrong? What hope does he still have? His most important statements:
flick over…
… Süle instead of Kehrer on the right-back position: “Niki trained well and did well in training up to that point. That’s what I can say. Then we made too many mistakes at the back. I’m not picking anyone out, I mean the whole team. Internally, however, I address things clearly.”
… Kimmich at right-back against Spain: “You can be sure that we will discuss every personnel and every position. Our job is to field the best team. We do that before every game.”
… lack of leadership in the team: “There were many things that we can and must do better. It’s about having courage and character to show yourself. We have to make our game better. We have a lot to do, we have to improve a lot.”
… the defence: “When you have two three top-class players, you have to put the lid on it. Then the game is decided. We weren’t able to create the necessary compactness on the defensive. Defend the goal with every greed, you have to do that. If you’re 1-0 up, you have to play that kind of thing home and defend it.”
… Manuel Neuer’s complicity in the goals conceded: “We can and must prevent the two goals in a different way and beforehand. We didn’t do some tactical things well.”
… the prospects against Spain: “We don’t have a shot left, the missed shot we had yesterday, that’s how we have to approach the whole thing. We have to stay positive.”
