Santander League | Celta strikes down Coudet and signs the Portuguese Carlos Carvalhal

Events have accelerated in the celtic dispatches. The board wanted to wait for the World Cup break to make a decision about Eduardo Coudet. Both parties did not rule out a reaction in the last two games before that league interruption that would allow them to bet on concluding the season. It was Carlos Mouriño’s favorite option also for economic reasons. But finally the board has opted for a immediate change on the bench and Coudet’s replacement will be Carlos Carvalhal.

The first part has become official this afternoon. The entity from Vigo has confirmed the cessation of the Argentine in a statement in which he thanks both him and his assistants “for the dedication, honesty and professionalism they showed from day one. They always offered a commendable attitude and did an outstanding jobwithout haggling over efforts and with exemplary involvement”. Celta explains that Chacho and the club are disassociating themselves after “a fruitful stage” after two years in which the team “offered great performance”.

The arrival of Carvalhal will allow the focus of the sports director, Luis Campos, to be aligned with that of the direct manager of the squad. Since summer it has been evident that the project had turned to the opposite side of Coudet’s wishes, who lost his ability to influence the construction of the team in favor of the Portuguese executive. Despite everything, Mouriño and Antonio Chaves continued to trust that Coudet would agree to work according to Campos’ premises or that he would at least maintain the competitive capacity that the team has had under his command since his arrival in the fall of 2020.

It has not been. The bad streak of results He has run out of time and has rushed the relay. And the man who bursts in to take charge of Celta is Carlos Carvalhal, who turned Sporting de Braga into one of the revelation teams in European football and who has been in charge of Al-Wahda in recent months. Carvalhal has a wide experience both in Portugal (Río Ave, Beiramar, Vitoria de Setubal, Marítimo, Sporting) and abroad (Swansea, Besiktas, Asteras Tripoli), but has never conducted in Spain. This same summer he spoke with enthusiasm of that possibility, since he had received two offers, and recalled his frequent visits to Balaídos and Riazor.

The Portuguese journalist Pedro Sepúlveda, who advanced the signing of Carvalhal, adds that signature until June 2024. He will therefore be the coach of the centenary, if permanence is achieved, and the date also seems to compromise the continuity of Luis Campos at least until then.
