Akiba Maid War

With the gang war over, things are still tense with the merger of the former Maidalien group. The leader of the Creatureland group tells them to sort out their problems with baseball. Like a number of other things, this is of course a bit ridiculous. I liked the fusion, alien theme of the only cafe had them changed to be axolotls. Because the Oinky Doink cafe is so small, they need to include their mascot as a player, as well as three Venezuelan students they found in Akihabara. Nagomi is very invested in the game, something no one else seems too thrilled about. Unsurprisingly, Zoya and Ranko are quite good, even Shiipon and Yumechi are also doing very well. The team’s foreign players and Nagomi, who had experience in softball, end up trailing each other. The maids stay true to their nature and are quite violent during the match. Nagomi is the only one who wants to have a fair game, as she believes that they can really overcome their problems without violence. She ends up being abused, but ends up winning over some of the other players with her motives. Things get worse and some deaths occur due to a surprise guest. Nagomi seemed overwhelmed that the game was over, but the end of the game was postponed. I had to laugh at the part where one of the cleaners said these members weren’t dead, and I ended up picking up the bodies and taking them back to the bench so they could wrap up the game . Ranko is getting away with it as usual, but we finally got to meet him with the head of Creatureland who probably could have guessed that he knew Ranko. Things finally seem to be looking up a bit for the cafe, like returning customers and the cafe being repaired (with the help of their Venezuelan teammates). However, we can see that Ranko is divided after her last conversation with the Chief. I wasn’t expecting a baseball episode, but I liked it. I wonder what else they will go with now. – Walter

Chainsaw Man

Chainsaw Man | anime

After three continuous days of fighting, Denji is finally able to defeat the Infinity Devil, freeing himself and the other members of Division IV from Floor 8’s time loop. really doesn’t want Hayakawa to face the Gun Devil, but thinks Denji is crazy enough to survive the encounter. The entire Public Division goes out to dinner to celebrate the recruits, though only Himeno seems to have any under his command, since everyone is either dead or transferred. When Makima finally shows up, Himeno and Hayakawa mistake her for a drinking bet to get information on Denji, but the division head drinks them under the table. Completely knocked down, Himeno finally gives Denji his first kiss, which goes great until she pukes in his mouth. It was a perfect encapsulation of this show: super gross but also incredibly funny, and also took with it a moment of character insight. The night ends with Himeno bringing Denji home, annoyed that he and Hayakawa are so in love with Makima. She offers to sleep with Denji, and I’m curious to see if he actually accepts her offer or holds a night with Makima once the Gun Devil is defeated. – Horrible

Bocchi Le Rocher!

Bocchi Le Rocher! After Party | anime

A typhoon and the ensuing bad weather end up causing problems for the band’s concert. The crowd is much smaller than expected and everyone seems nervous. I was thrilled to see the alcoholic Hiroi appear after he appeared a few episodes ago. The animation of the series is something that has been strong, especially with how they change up different styles. It’s very noticeable every time there’s a performance and you can see how the band plays differently than they did when they auditioned. Things don’t go as well as they should, but Bocchi eventually brings everyone back. The party they have afterwards was great too. Bocchi having another one of his delusions is always a highlight, this one being about Bocchi imagining a failed career in the future. It’s both sad and hilarious as always. We see that Nijika has disappeared and Bocchi is looking for her. In a somewhat different change of pace, we learn more about Nijika and her family situation. She also reveals that she knows about Bocchi’s videos online. The episode, like almost every other, was strong. – Walter

Mob Psycho 100 III

Mob Psycho 100 | anime

Mob and the others are determined to give Kurata a moment to remember despite their loss on the mountain as they make their way to the top. No one sees eye to eye or communicates effectively, and I love how the animation reflects that. At first, I found the stylistic choice a bit off-putting, with characters mostly faceless or off-model. The movements were a little jerky. Once it occurred to me that it was because everyone was clumsy and didn’t know what was going on, it made a bit more sense, especially because the second half of the episode doesn’t have the same animation quirks. Either way, the group eventually comes to terms with each other thanks to Reigen’s words of encouragement and just find the bliss of the moment as they have fun at the top trying to summon aliens. To their surprise, they succeed. They are definitely the most kawaii aliens I have ever seen. They take everyone to space and have a good time before dropping everyone except Inukawa, whom the aliens keep on board for an undisclosed amount of time as a sex slave. This is the one and only time that a Crowd Psycho gag fell flat for me, even though it’s thematically relevant. They end up returning Inukawa as well, whose memories of his capture are hazy and indistinct. With that, we enter the final arc of the series, and I’m emotionally unprepared. – Horrible

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch of Mercury

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch of Mercury Suletta Face | anime

I finally caught up with the series this week. I have mixed feelings about this one. I watched the prologue a while ago, and from there to how the series started, it felt a bit strange. Honestly, I’m not a fan of the whole school setting it’s in. However, from everything that’s been happening in the big picture with the series, I can see that it doesn’t stay that way. Suletta is a character that I can see some people don’t care about. That being said, I like her, she’s so clumsy and shy that I can’t help but like her. There are just a few moments that I enjoy, like the first episode slap. I also think it’s almost a thing for most episodes that end with her being shocked by something. I like the design of the Aerial Gundam, and what it does with its shield and beam weapons is different. I like some of the others such as Miorine and Guel, who as a fool started growing on me as he kept losing. The character that interests me is the mother of Suletta who plays the role of the series “Not Char”. As the other students at school grow into me, we start to see more of the darker elements that Gundam is known for. The most recent episode ends with a revelation (one that not everyone watches or even would know) that going to Suletta will be interesting. She begins to learn more about her mother. Depending on whether you think about some of the theories floating around Suletta and Ariel, it will be interesting to see what comes to light. Although I had some issues with it, I still love this series and will follow it. – Walter
