NBA: The Timberwolves without the services of Karl-Anthony Towns for six weeks

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Timberwolves star player Karl-Anthony Towns will miss several weeks of action with a strained right calf muscle.

Towns was injured midway through the third quarter in a 142-127 loss to the Washington Wizards on Monday night. He needed help getting off the field, as he was unable to put weight on his leg.

The Timberwolves announced Tuesday that a magnetic resonance imaging exam confirmed the injury, which will keep Towns sidelined indefinitely.

The team said Towns’ condition will be “reassessed in several weeks.” He’s averaging 20.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 21 games this season and has shot 50.5 percent from the field.

After playing all 82 games a season in his first three NBA campaigns, the 27-year-old has since missed a lot of games due to injury or illness.

Newcomer Rudy Gobert acted as a pivot as Towns took on the power wing role when they were on the pitch at the same time. Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch wasn’t ready to speak publicly about his roster options after Monday’s duel.

The Timberwolves host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night.
