Montpellier, as a champion, brings down Toulon in its fortress of Mayol

After ten consecutive victories on its Mayol lawn, the Rugby Club Toulonnais fell this Sunday against Montpellier (16-26), at the end of the 10th day of the Top 14. The tries were scored by Yacouba Camara (17e) and Simon-Pierre Chauvac (74e) for Montpellier, and by Sitaleki Timani (59e) for Toulon. The RCT, narrowly beaten last week by the UBB, conceded a second defeat in a row and fell to 8th place, doubled by their evening opponent, who revived by gaining four places (7th).

A one-sided first half

Philippe Saint-André’s men led 13-0 at the break after a pragmatic first half, validating their highlights with an opportunistic try from Yacouba Camara on a big recovery error from Gael Dréan, but also by points on foot by Louis Carbonel. The RCT child returned to Mayol for the first time with the MHR jersey on his shoulders. He delivered a very clean copy, notably achieving a 100% on foot.

His former team-mates proved to be much too imprecise, put to sleep by the clinical play of Montpellier who rediscovered the iron defense and discipline that were their strength last season.

A Toulon alarm clock quickly extinguished

When they returned from the locker room, the Varois reacted well by returning to 16-16 everywhere thanks in particular to a good entry from Baptiste Serin and a try from Sitaleki Timani (58e). But the Héraultais knew how to keep a cool head, carried by a precious Zach Mercer. They folded the meeting with a try from Simon-Pierre Chauvac (74e).

In this weekend of doubloons, it was who would best manage the absence of the internationals. In this game, Montpellier was the strongest this Sunday.
